Munambam Land Protest to Conclude Today After 413 Days

Kochi: The marathon 413-day protest by coastal residents of Munambam over the long-standing land dispute is set to come to an end today, following a crucial High Court directive that land tax should continue to be accepted until the final verdict in the case is delivered.

The decision to call off the agitation marked by continuous hunger strikes and round-the-clock demonstrations was taken late on Friday after discussions between protest leaders and government representatives.

Industries and Law Minister P. Rajeev will visit the protest site at 2:30 pm today to formally end the hunger strike by offering lemon juice to the protesters who have been on an indefinite fast.

The direct agitation began on September 27, 2024, evolving into one of Kerala’s longest grassroots protests in recent years. Vypin MLA K. N. Unnikrishnan, along with other local representatives, is expected to accompany the minister during the concluding ceremony.

According to office-bearers of the Munambam Land Protection Committee, the decision to withdraw the agitation was based on assurances given by Minister Rajeev. He has promised that there will be no restrictions on residents’ movement within the disputed area, addressing one of the core concerns that had fueled the prolonged protest.

To ensure better access and assistance, the minister has also directed the establishment of a special help desk at Kuzhuppilly village, which will function as a point of support for local residents until the legal process concludes.

While today’s developments mark the end of the hunger strike and associated demonstrations, the underlying land dispute awaits a judicial resolution. The High Court’s order to allow the payment of land tax has provided temporary relief and a measure of recognition for the settlers, but the final verdict will determine the long-term fate of the affected families.

For now, the coastal community of Munambam prepares to disperse from the protest site bringing to a close a year-long display of resilience, unity, and civil resistance.
