Hong Kong: Large crowds gathered outside Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po on Sunday to mourn the victims of Hong Kong’s deadliest residential fire in decades. People carried white flowers, candles, and handwritten notes as they stood in silence near the blackened building where at least 146 people lost their lives.
Many pushed strollers or held children by the hand, while others came alone, pausing quietly before placing tributes at the growing memorial. Some wiped tears from their faces as they read messages left by grieving families.
The fire, which broke out earlier this week, spread rapidly through the high rise building that was under renovation. Bamboo scaffolding and plastic mesh surrounding the tower are believed to have fueled the flames. Survivors said smoke filled the hallways within minutes and that fire alarms did not activate in time.
Authorities say around 150 people remain unaccounted for. Rescuers are continuing to search the site, but hopes are fading for those still missing.
Anger has spread along with grief. Some residents say they had warned officials about fire risks months earlier and were frustrated that no action was taken. The government has arrested several individuals linked to the construction project, and investigations are continuing.
Beijing has cautioned residents not to turn mourning gatherings into protests, urging people to avoid large demonstrations and to maintain public order. The warning came after online petitions calling for an independent inquiry gained thousands of signatures before being removed.
Despite the caution, many mourners say they want answers. One woman who lost a relative in the blaze said she came to the site because she could not accept silence.
“We are here because we care,” she said softly. “We want truth and responsibility.”
Temporary shelters have been set up for displaced residents as the community waits for updates and prepares for more funerals. The burned tower now stands as a painful reminder of the tragedy and the many unanswered questions surrounding it.
