Nativity scene to return to Melbourne after seven years

Melbourne: The traditional Christmas nativity scene will return to Melbourne’s city center this year after being absent for around seven years. The display will be placed at Federation Square next week as part of the city’s expanded Christmas celebrations.

Church leaders and city officials have welcomed the decision. Melbourne Archbishop Peter A Comensoli said he was happy to see the nativity return and called it a reminder of joy, hope and peace. He said the Christmas message encourages people to care for those who are struggling or alone during the festive season.

Deputy Lord Mayor Roshena Campbell said she was proud to support the return of the display and invited families across Melbourne to visit the scene and take part in community events. Lord Mayor Nick Reece also supported the move and said the nativity scene reflects the historical roots of Christmas. He added that Christmas belongs to everyone and that the display is meant to be welcoming and inclusive.

The nativity scene will be part of a larger program of decorations, music and events around the city. Weekly Christmas carol performances are also planned for City Square.

In addition to the display at Federation Square, the long running Australian Nativity Scene at St Elizabeth’s Parish in Dandenong North will open from December 1 to January 9. The parish display has become a well known Christmas attraction for families and visitors.

The return of the public nativity scene marks a shift in the city’s approach to Christmas decorations after earlier decisions removed the display from civic areas. Supporters say this year’s move reflects both community tradition and growing interest in visible Christmas celebrations.
