Penang: The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) has officially released Mater Populi Fidelis “The Mother of the Faithful People” a comprehensive Doctrinal Note exploring Marian titles that highlight the Virgin Mary’s role in humanity’s salvation. The launch took place on 1 December in Penang, Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in contemporary Marian theology.
During the ceremony, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the CCBI, presented the first printed copy to Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Archbishop of Penang. The symbolic handover underscored the growing theological collaboration and fraternal ties within the Asian Church.
The newly released document is the product of years of scholarly work and ecclesial collaboration. Mater Populi Fidelis offers a coherent and accessible teaching on Mary’s participation in Christ’s redemptive mission, affirming her as the spiritual mother of all believers.
Drawing extensively from Sacred Scripture, the note integrates insights from the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, the richness of the Eastern Christian tradition, and the teachings of recent Popes. This synthesis provides a robust theological foundation for understanding Mary’s role in salvation history.
Beyond doctrinal clarity, the document aims to strengthen and deepen Marian devotion in contemporary Church life. It presents Mary not only as an intercessor but as an active participant in the unfolding of God’s plan, encouraging Catholics to approach her with renewed reverence and confidence.
With Mater Populi Fidelis, the CCBI offers the global Church a valuable resource to enrich spiritual formation, liturgical reflection, and pastoral teaching on the Blessed Virgin Mary.
