Bagalkot: St. Mary’s Church in Bagalkot came alive with colour, rhythm and faith as the deanery hosted a vibrant Dance and Drama Competition that gathered young performers from six mission stations. The event offered a creative platform for children and youth to narrate the parables and teachings of Jesus through expressive dance, dramatization and storytelling.
Participants from Karadi, Gajendragad, Jamkhandi, Asangi, Mudhol and Guledgudda joined the festival, demonstrating remarkable enthusiasm despite the modest size and remote nature of their communities. Their performances brought to life some of the most cherished Gospel parables, including the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, the Lost Sheep and the Sower, each presented with fresh interpretation and heartfelt conviction.
The competition was organized under the leadership of Fr. Freddy Anto Raj, with the assistance of Assistant Parish Priest Fr. Anthony and the St. Ann’s Sisters Community. The Diocesan Commission for Faith Formation also extended its support, ensuring that the event ran smoothly and maintained a strong catechetical focus.
Bishop Derek Fernandes of Belgaum addressed the young participants, encouraging them to remember that the essence of the event was not competition but testimony. He reminded them that portraying Christ’s message creatively is itself a form of evangelization in everyday life.
Judges commended the dedication, preparation and artistic talent displayed by the children, emphasizing the positive impact of presenting faith through performing arts. The deanery community celebrated the event as more than a contest recognizing it as an opportunity to strengthen unity across mission stations, inspire missionary zeal among the youth, and foster joyful expressions of Christian faith. The festival concluded with renewed enthusiasm for nurturing faith through creative and communal initiatives within the Bagalkot deanery.
