Semmiyamangalam: The Vellore Diocese commemorated its 73rd foundation anniversary alongside the first year of Bishop Ambrose’s leadership through a large-scale ecological initiative, reinforcing the Church’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The celebrations, held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Semmiyamangalam, centered on a massive tree-planting programme, bringing together clergy, parishioners, and volunteers in a collective effort for creation care.
The programme was spearheaded by Fr. Rayappa Kasi, a noted environmental advocate affiliated with Cardijn Community India and serving with the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, with active participation from diocesan procurator Fr. Richard Perira and parish priest Fr. Daniel Sharma. Their leadership emphasized the integration of faith with ecological responsibility, inspiring community engagement.
Drawing inspiration from Pope Francis’ encyclicals, the event highlighted the teachings of Laudato Si’, advocating care for creation as a fundamental expression of faith, and Laudate Deum, which calls for translating ecological reflection into concrete action. The diocese reiterated its ongoing commitment to integral ecology, sustainability, and fostering environmental consciousness across parishes and the wider community.
As part of the celebrations, the parish community planted 1,500 saplings across church premises and adjoining areas. This ambitious effort not only aimed to strengthen local biodiversity but also served as a visible commitment to long-term environmental stewardship. The initiative drew participation from parishioners of all ages, transforming the anniversary celebration into a shared mission for ecological care.
The programme concluded with heartfelt appreciation for all clergy, volunteers, and parishioners who contributed to its success, marking the initiative as a tangible demonstration of the diocese’s dedication to protecting the environment and promoting a sustainable future for generations to come.
