At least 23 killed in Goa nightclub fire as investigation continues

Panaji: A late night fire at a popular nightclub in Goa has claimed the lives of at least 23 people and left several others injured. The fire broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora around 1 am on Saturday. Initial reports suggest that the incident may have started after a gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen area.

Witnesses said the fire spread quickly and many people inside the club had little time to escape. Officials said most of the victims were staff members, and the bodies of many were found near the staircase and kitchen area, indicating they may have been trapped while trying to escape. Among the dead are at least three women and a few tourists.

More than 50 people were taken to nearby hospitals. Some of the injured are being treated at Goa Medical College. Doctors said many victims suffered from smoke inhalation injuries.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site and described it as a painful day for the state. He ordered a detailed investigation and said authorities will check whether the nightclub had proper fire safety measures, emergency exits, and valid permits.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other leaders expressed condolences and assured support for the victims and their families.

Following the tragedy, local leaders and safety officials have called for a full safety audit of all clubs and nightlife venues in Goa. They said the incident highlights the need for strict compliance with fire safety norms to avoid similar accidents in the future.

Police have sealed the site and collected evidence for forensic examination. A detailed report on the exact cause of the fire is expected soon.

The tragedy has shocked locals and tourists, as Goa is known for its vibrant nightlife and holiday crowds during December. Families of the victims are waiting for official identification and final updates from authorities.

The state government said it will provide support to the affected families and ensure accountability once the investigation is complete.
