Christmas lights return to Bethlehem bringing hope to Palestinians

Bethlehem: Christmas lights returned to Bethlehem this weekend for the first time in two years giving many Palestinians a moment of joy and hope after a long period of conflict and hardship.

Thousands gathered in Manger Square near the Church of the Nativity to watch a 20 meter Christmas tree light up the historic city. The event was quieter than past celebrations but the mood was emotional as families waved flags sang carols and took photos of the tree glowing against the night sky.

Officials said the ceremony was not only a celebration but also a message of resilience. Bethlehem Mayor Hana Haniyeh told the crowd that this year’s Christmas season carried deep meaning because many people in the region are still suffering. She said the lighting of the tree is a sign that Bethlehem remainsa symbol of hope peace and faith.

For the past two years public Christmas events were cancelled due to conflict in Gaza and growing tensions in the occupied West Bank. Many local families said the return of the celebration felt like a step toward normal life even though sadness remains.

Tourism is one of the city’s main sources of income and it nearly collapsed during the fighting. Local hotel owners and shopkeepers hope that the reopening of celebrations will slowly bring visitors back. Some hotels in Bethlehem are already reporting better bookings for the holiday season though numbers remain lower than before the war.

Residents said this Christmas feels different. There were no fireworks and the celebration was more subdued. Instead the evening focused on prayers for peace and songs asking for unity in the region.

A young university student who attended with her family said the event gave her hope. She said having the lights back reminds people that even during difficult times life must continue and peace remains possible.

As Bethlehem lights its tree again many in the city say they are holding onto hope that the return of tradition will be followed by stability peace and better days ahead.
