Zelenskiy says peace talks with United States were constructive but challenging

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said his latest round of discussions with United States officials on a possible peace plan to end the war with Russia were constructive but not easy.

Speaking after several days of meetings with a US delegation led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, the president said both sides understood each other's positions clearly. He added that Ukraine continues to insist on security guarantees and protection of its sovereignty.

Zelenskiy said important differences remain and warned that the future steps will require patience and careful negotiation. He also noted that Ukraine will continue talks with European partners, including leaders from France, Germany and the United Kingdom, before heading to Brussels for further discussions.

The United States has said a peace agreement is within reach, but Russia has demanded major changes to the current proposals. European leaders have expressed concern that Ukraine should not be pressured into giving up territory in exchange for a ceasefire.

Zelenskiy said Ukraine seeks a real and lasting peace built on justice. He stressed that any agreement must ensure the security and independence of the country.

Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue in the coming weeks as fighting on the ground remains ongoing.
