Fire in Jakarta office building kills 22 people

Jakarta: A fire in a seven storey office building in central Jakarta has killed 22 people and left many others injured on Monday afternoon. Local officials said the fire broke out around midday in a building located in the Kemayoran area. The offices belonged to Terra Drone Indonesia, a company working with drone technology.

More than one hundred firefighters and twenty nine fire trucks were sent to the scene. Rescue teams used portable ladders to help workers escape from upper floors. Many employees were inside the building during lunch break when the fire started, which may have contributed to the high number of deaths.

Authorities confirmed that among the victims were seven men and fifteen women, including a pregnant woman. Several survivors were treated for breathing difficulties and smoke inhalation. Families of victims gathered at a nearby hospital where bodies were being identified.

Police and emergency officers are investigating the exact cause of the fire. Early reports suggest that the fire may have been triggered by a drone battery stored or tested on the lower floor. However, officials said the investigation will continue and no final conclusion has been made.

The tragedy has raised questions about fire safety standards in office buildings across Jakarta, especially workplaces that handle batteries or electronic equipment. Officials said both the building owner and the company will be questioned as part of the investigation.

Authorities said rescue efforts and safety inspections will continue in the coming days.
