Pope calls for immediate end to clashes on Thai Cambodian border

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has appealed for a swift end to the renewed violence along the border between Thailand and Cambodia, where fresh clashes have caused casualties and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

Speaking at his General Audience on Wednesday,  Pope said he was deeply saddened by the latest reports from the region. He noted that both civilians and military personnel have been affected by the fighting, which has once again disrupted life for communities living along the contested frontier.

Pope expressed his closeness in prayer to the people of both nations and shared his concern for families who have been displaced. He urged all sides involved in the dispute to stop the fighting and return to dialogue as soon as possible.

The violence marks another chapter in a long running border conflict linked to disputed areas, including land around culturally significant temples. While previous diplomatic efforts have led to temporary calm, the situation has often remained fragile, and local residents frequently find themselves caught between the two sides.

At the conclusion of the audience, Pope Leo called on leaders to put an end to the hostilities immediately and to work toward a peaceful resolution that protects communities and prevents further suffering.
