Modi and Trump review progress in ties during warm phone call

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump held a warm and friendly phone call on Thursday, reviewing the progress made in their countries relationship at a time when trade tensions remain unresolved.

This is the third conversation between the two leaders since Washington imposed sharp tariffs on several Indian exports earlier this year. The United States had raised duties, in some cases up to fifty per cent, following disagreements over market access and India’s earlier decision to continue buying oil from Russia.

According to official statements, Modi and Trump discussed the status of ongoing trade talks and expressed satisfaction with the wider partnership that covers defence, energy, technology and regional security. A senior United States trade official is currently in New Delhi for negotiations, but it is still uncertain whether a trade agreement can be finalised before the end of the year.

Reports from Indian and American media described the conversation as positive, noting that both leaders highlighted the importance of keeping the strategic partnership strong despite the tariff dispute. India has in recent months reduced its imports of Russian crude, which had been a major concern for Washington.

In the United States, some lawmakers have questioned President Trump’s tariff approach, saying it could hurt long term ties with India at a time when both countries share common concerns over regional stability.

For now, both sides appear committed to keeping dialogue open. Officials expect that trade and technology cooperation will remain key areas of focus as New Delhi and Washington work to ease tensions and reinforce their strategic partnership.
