Vatican City: During his Wednesday General Audience, Pope Leo XIV called on the faithful to live Advent as a time of prayer, preparation and inner reflection, warning against getting lost in frenetic activity as Christmas approaches.
Speaking to pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square, which is now decorated with the Vatican Christmas tree and Nativity Scene, Pope reminded believers that Advent is meant to help them welcome the birth of Christ with attentive and open hearts.
Addressing English speaking pilgrims, the Pope prayed that families may experience a blessed Advent as they prepare for the coming of the newborn Jesus, Son of God and Savior of the world.
In his greeting to Italian faithful, he reflected on the importance of Nativity Scenes in homes and public spaces. He noted that the Nativity is not only an expression of faith, but also a key part of Christian culture and art. He expressed hope that this tradition will continue to help people remember Jesus, who became man and came to dwell among us. Earlier this week, the Vatican unveiled its Nativity Scenes in St Peter’s Square and the Paul VI Audience Hall.
As Christmas draws closer, the Pope cautioned against allowing external preparations to overshadow the spiritual meaning of the feast. Greeting French speakers, he urged them not to fall into excessive busyness that can lead to a superficial celebration and eventual disappointment. Instead, he encouraged taking time to prepare the heart so that Christ’s loving presence may become a lasting treasure in life.
To German pilgrims, the Pope said that Advent invites believers to welcome Jesus without reservation. He reminded them that Christ is our hope and encouraged everyone to joyfully await the feast of his birth, praying with confidence for the Lord to come.
In his message to Polish speakers, Pope described the final days of Advent as a special time for reflection and prayer. He encouraged spiritual preparation through the Sacrament of Confession or participation in retreats, helping believers to be ready for the coming of Christ.
Greeting Portuguese speaking pilgrims, he referred to the Christmas Novena, which began earlier this week and holds deep traditional value in many communities. He said this devotion can help renew hearts and prepare them for the imminent birth of the Son of God, entrusting families to the care of Our Lady of Hope.
Addressing Arabic speaking faithful, Pope emphasized that Christians are called to open their hearts to the love of God and neighbor, which leads to true peace and joy.
The Vatican also announced upcoming changes to the General Audience schedule. There will be no General Audience on December 24 due to Christmas Eve. A Jubilee Audience will take place on December 20, while the next General Audience is scheduled for December 31. The last General Audience held on New Year’s Eve was fifty years ago, in 1975, presided over by Pope St Paul VI.
