BP names Meg O’Neill as new chief executive in major leadership shift

London: BP has appointed Meg O’Neill as its next chief executive, marking a historic change at the British energy major. She will take charge on April 1, 2026, becoming the first woman and the first external leader to head the company in its long history.

The decision follows the sudden departure of Murray Auchincloss, whose tenure as chief executive lasted less than two years. Until O’Neill formally takes over, BP executive vice president Carol Howle will serve as interim chief executive to ensure continuity in leadership and operations.

O’Neill is currently the chief executive of Woodside Energy in Australia and is widely known for her experience in managing large scale oil and gas businesses. BP’s board said her appointment reflects the company’s need for steady leadership as it refocuses on improving performance, strengthening returns for shareholders, and managing costs in a volatile global energy market.

In recent years, BP has faced pressure from investors over weaker financial performance compared with rivals and concerns about the pace and cost of its transition strategy. The choice of an experienced industry outsider signals a renewed emphasis on discipline, profitability, and clearer strategic direction, while continuing to acknowledge the realities of the global energy transition.

O’Neill’s move to BP has also triggered changes in Australia, with Woodside beginning the process of finding a new leader following her decision to step down. Industry analysts say her appointment underlines a broader trend among major energy companies to prioritise operational strength and stable leadership during a period of economic uncertainty.

BP said the transition period will allow O’Neill to work closely with the board and senior management so that she can take over with a clear understanding of the company’s challenges and priorities in 2026 and beyond.
