Israel looks to deepen defense ties with India amid European hurdles

Jerusalem: Israel is moving to strengthen its defense partnership with India as it adjusts its global strategy amid political and regulatory challenges in parts of Europe, according to recent developments in the defense and diplomatic space.

The shift comes at a time when some European countries have tightened scrutiny on defense cooperation with Israel following the ongoing conflict in Gaza. These restrictions have encouraged Israel to diversify its defense supply chains and partnerships, with India emerging as a key strategic option.

India and Israel already share a long standing defense relationship, covering missile systems, surveillance technology, drones and electronic warfare equipment. In recent months, this cooperation has expanded beyond weapons purchases to include joint research, co development and technology sharing.

In November, the two countries signed a new agreement to boost defense industrial cooperation. The understanding focuses on innovation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and joint manufacturing, aligning with India’s push to strengthen domestic defense production.

Officials and analysts note that Israel sees India as a reliable partner with a growing industrial base, skilled manpower and strong political ties. For India, closer cooperation with Israel supports its broader goal of modernising the armed forces while reducing dependence on imports.

However, the move does not signal a complete break between Israel and Europe. Major defense deals with European countries continue, including large scale air defense projects. Instead, Israel appears to be balancing its partnerships, reducing over reliance on any single region.

India’s engagement with Israel also fits into its wider West Asia strategy, which seeks to maintain strong relations across the region while advancing national security and economic interests.

Overall, the evolving partnership reflects a gradual realignment rather than a sudden shift. As global geopolitical pressures reshape defense relationships, India and Israel are positioning themselves as long term strategic partners in a rapidly changing security environment.
