December 20: Saint Dominic of Silos

Saint Dominic of Silos  was born around the year 1000 in Cañas, Navarre, Spain, to a humble peasant family. During his early years, he worked as a shepherd before feeling called to religious life. He later entered a Benedictine monastery in Navarre.

When Saint Dominic firmly refused the King of Navarre’s demand to surrender monastery lands, he was forced to leave the community along with two fellow monks. Seeking refuge, he travelled to Old Castile, where he was warmly received by the king. There, he joined the monastery of San Sebastian in Silos, which at the time was in poor condition both spiritually and materially.

Saint Dominic was soon chosen as abbot. Under his leadership, the monastery experienced a remarkable renewal. He restored discipline and prayer, rebuilt the monastery’s buildings, strengthened its finances, and expanded its charitable works. His deep faith and constant prayer were widely known, and many people believed they received healing through his intercession.

Saint Dominic of Silos was also especially remembered for his compassion toward Christians held captive by the Moors, working tirelessly to secure their freedom.

He died on December 10, 1073, in Silos, Spain, leaving behind a lasting legacy of faith, courage, and service to others.
