Pope Leo XIV calls for peace for all children as Christmas approaches

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called on the world to pray and work so that all children may live in peace, as he reflected on the example of Saint Joseph during the Angelus on the Fourth Sunday of Advent in Saint Peter’s Square.

Speaking to pilgrims and faithful gathered for the midday prayer, the Pope focused on the Gospel figure of Saint Joseph and highlighted the virtues of mercy, faith, trust, piety and charity that shaped his life. He said these qualities help prepare hearts to welcome Christ and to live with kindness and openness toward others as Christmas draws near.

Pope recalled how God revealed Joseph’s mission through a dream and how Joseph responded with courage and deep faith. Even before fully understanding God’s plan, Joseph chose a path of mercy toward Mary, showing sensitivity and compassion. When the angel revealed God’s will, Joseph entrusted his future entirely to God, leaving behind his own security with confidence and trust.

Pope Leo XIV said the virtues lived by Joseph are important for believers today, especially in the final days of Advent. He encouraged everyone to become a welcoming presence for others, like a manger ready to receive Christ, a hospitable home, and a living sign of God’s closeness.

Inviting the faithful to follow Saint Joseph’s example,  Pope urged them to forgive, encourage and bring hope to those around them. He also called for renewed trust in prayer, placing all things in God’s hands and relying on his loving providence. He said believers can always find support in the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, who were the first to welcome Jesus with faith and love.

At the end of the Angelus, the Pope warmly greeted the crowd, including more than 1,500 children from Rome and groups from Spain and Hong Kong.
Many of the children brought small figurines of the baby Jesus, known as bambinelli, to be blessed. These figures will later be placed in nativity scenes in homes, schools, parishes and oratories.

Addressing the children, Pope Leo XIV asked them to pray for his intentions and especially for peace. He expressed heartfelt gratitude and led everyone in praying that all the children of the world may live in peace. He concluded by offering his blessing and wishing everyone a happy Sunday and a holy and peaceful Christmas.
