Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called on Vatican employees to learn humility and simplicity from the birth of Jesus and to make these values the style of the Church in every aspect of its life and work.
Addressing employees of the Roman Curia, the Governorate of Vatican City State, and the Vicariate of Rome, along with their families, Pope spoke during the traditional Christmas audience held at the Paul VI Audience Hall.
Pope thanked those present for their warm welcome and for their daily service, saying he is gradually discovering the Vatican as a great mosaic of offices and services. He shared his hope of visiting different workplaces in the future to meet staff personally.
He also asked employees to carry his greetings to their families, especially the elderly and the sick, assuring them of his prayers.
Reflecting on Christmas, Pope Leo XIV spoke about nativity scenes and the many ordinary figures that appear in them, such as craftsmen, innkeepers, and workers. Though many of these professions belong to the past, he said they carry a lasting message.
These figures, Pope explained, remind people that everyday work and daily responsibilities find their true meaning in God’s plan, which is centred on Jesus Christ. The Child lying in the manger, he said, blesses everyone and everything, spreading God’s tenderness through His gentle and humble presence.
While Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds stand in awe before the newborn Jesus, other figures in the nativity continue their work. Pope noted that even if they appear distant from the central event, they take part by faithfully doing their duty.
This, he said, is also true for people today. By carrying out their responsibilities with care, honesty, and commitment, people give praise to God. For lay workers, loving one’s family and caring for children are also ways of giving glory to the Lord.
Pope concluded by encouraging everyone to do their work well and with dedication, trusting that even simple and hidden efforts are precious in God’s eyes and help shape a Church marked by humility and simplicity.
