A Season of Compassion – Catholic Congress and Missionaries of Charity Unite to Serve the Homeless This Christmas

Perth: Located near McIver Train Station, the Moore Street Hub has become a vital lifeline for Perth’s homeless community. Open on weekdays from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Sunday mornings from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, the Hub offers hot meals, healthcare access, and hygiene facilities. What began as a small outreach now supports hundreds each week, restoring dignity and providing compassionate care that extends well beyond basic necessities.

Faith-Led Partnership Strengthens Advent Outreach
This Advent season, Catholic Congress partnered with the Missionaries of Charity to support the Moore Street Hub and extend assistance to the Madagascar Mission. Founded by Saint Mother Teresa, the Missionaries of Charity have served Perth’s homeless since 2004, providing meals every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning. Their ministry, rooted in humility and compassion, reflects Mother Teresa’s belief that love, presence, and respect are as essential as food.

‘Dollar a Day’ Initiative Powered by Generosity
Catholic Congress facilitated the “Dollar a Day” Advent charity initiative, encouraging members to contribute $20 or more during the season of preparation. While the organisation coordinated the effort, it emphasised that the true Good Samaritans were the generous contributors. Every donation represented an act of love, making the wider community the driving force behind the initiative’s success.

Christmas Eve: Faith in Action
On Christmas Eve at 5:00 pm, leaders of Catholic Congress joined the Missionaries of Charity at the Moore Street Hub to experience the joy of giving firsthand. The outreach began with the Our Father prayer, followed by the distribution of chicken biryani to more than 83 homeless individuals. The Sisters expressed heartfelt appreciation for the collaboration, describing it as a living witness to the message of Christ—one of service, solidarity, and hope. Inspired by this experience, Catholic Congress has expressed its intention to expand similar outreach initiatives to other major Australian cities in 2026, particularly where the Syro-Malabar community is active.

Collective Effort Addressing Homelessness
In Perth, typically four Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity continue their work through donations and volunteer support, while nationally they serve in cities including Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Their efforts are complemented by City of Perth initiatives such as extended day-centre hours and safe night shelters, alongside State Government programs including Djuripiny Mia and Wandjoo Bidi, which focus on long-term housing solutions. Together, faith organisations, government bodies, and the wider community demonstrate that shared responsibility remains essential in building a compassionate future where no one is left behind.
