Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Friday that important decisions could be taken before the New Year as diplomatic efforts intensify to find a path toward ending the war with Russia. His remarks come ahead of an expected meeting with United States President Donald Trump.
Speaking to reporters, Zelenskiy said preparations were underway for a direct meeting with Trump in the near future. He expressed hope that talks at the highest level could help move discussions forward on security issues, peace proposals and Ukraine’s long term recovery.
Zelenskiy said Ukrainian officials have already held several rounds of discussions with US representatives focused on ways to bring the conflict closer to an end. These talks, he said, covered possible negotiation formats, security guarantees for Ukraine and steps that could help stop the fighting.
The Ukrainian leader acknowledged that serious differences remain, especially over territorial questions and the status of areas currently under Russian control. He stressed that Ukraine would not accept any agreement that compromises its sovereignty or independence.
Despite renewed diplomatic contacts, fighting continues on the ground, underlining the urgency of political efforts. Zelenskiy said Ukraine hopes stronger engagement with the United States can help create momentum for a meaningful peace process.
The planned meeting with Donald Trump is being closely watched internationally, as any shift in US involvement could have a significant impact on the direction of the war and future peace talks.
