Guatemala City: At least 15 people were killed and 19 others were injured after a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in western Guatemala on Saturday, according to local authorities.
The accident happened on the Inter American Highway in the Sololá department, a mountainous region known for sharp bends and poor visibility. Officials said the bus was travelling through the area when it lost control and fell into the ravine.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and medical teams, rushed to the scene and worked for several hours to rescue survivors and recover bodies. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in serious condition.
Authorities confirmed that the victims include men, women and at least one minor. The exact number could change as rescue teams complete their work in the difficult terrain.
Investigators have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash. However, officials said dense fog and challenging road conditions may have contributed to the accident. A full investigation is under way.
Deadly bus accidents are not uncommon in Guatemala, where winding mountain roads and ageing public transport vehicles often raise safety concerns. Local officials have renewed calls for stricter safety checks and improved road conditions following the tragedy.
