Pope Leo sends humanitarian aid to Ukraine on Holy Family Sunday

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has sent three truckloads of humanitarian aid to parts of Ukraine that have been badly affected by ongoing bombing, offering support to families facing displacement, hardship and uncertainty.

The aid includes around one hundred thousand food packets that can be turned into nutritious soups with a small amount of water. The supplies are meant to bring relief to families struggling with shortages of food, electricity, water and heating, especially during winter.

Speaking to Vatican media, Papal Almoner Cardinal Konrad Krajewski described the initiative as a small but meaningful gesture. He said  Pope wanted to show closeness to families who, like the Holy Family of Nazareth, are forced to walk a painful path of exile in search of safety.

The cardinal explained that many families in Ukraine are living in fear and insecurity, often displaced by violence and cut off from basic services. Through this donation,  Pope wishes to be near those who suffer rejection, abandonment and loss.

Cardinal Krajewski also noted that even before Christmas, Pope Leo had sent financial assistance to several countries through the Office of Papal Charities and Vatican diplomatic missions. In the case of Ukraine, the three trucks carrying humanitarian supplies, provided with the support of a Korean food company, arrived at the Vatican before Christmas and were then sent to the regions most affected by the war.

He stressed that Pope Leo does not limit his response to prayer alone but seeks to be present in a concrete way in the lives of families enduring the pain of conflict.

The aid delivery on Holy Family Sunday reflects the Pope’s call to remember families suffering because of war and to stand with them in their search for dignity, safety and peace.
