Massive fire at Ernakulam Broadway guts several shops

Kochi: A massive fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday at the busy Ernakulam Broadway, causing extensive damage to a row of shops in one of Kochi’s oldest commercial areas.

The fire started around 1 am near the Sridar Cinema and Koluthara Bazaar area and spread quickly through closely packed shops selling fancy items and toys. By the time firefighters reached the spot, flames had already engulfed several establishments.

Fire and rescue services rushed multiple units to the scene and began operations immediately. After nearly one and a half hours of continuous effort, the fire was fully brought under control by around 3 30 am. Officials said the narrow lanes and dense layout of the market made firefighting challenging.

At least ten to twelve shops were completely gutted in the blaze. Large quantities of goods were destroyed, leading to heavy financial losses for traders. However, no injuries or casualties were reported, as the area was largely deserted at the time of the incident.

Preliminary assessments suggest the fire may have originated from waste or scrap materials stored in a nearby shed, but the exact cause has not yet been confirmed. Fire officials said a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine how the blaze started.

Broadway is one of Kochi’s most crowded wholesale and retail hubs, and the incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety in congested market areas. Authorities are expected to review safety measures and issue further guidelines following the investigation.
