Saudi envoy says Yemen separatist leader blocked delegation from landing in Aden

Aden: Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Yemen has accused the leader of the southern separatist group of blocking a Saudi delegation from landing in the port city of Aden, raising tensions between former allies involved in Yemen’s long conflict.

The Saudi envoy said the aircraft was prevented from landing at Aden international airport on Wednesday despite prior coordination. The delegation was travelling to discuss security and political issues amid growing unrest in southern Yemen.

According to Saudi officials, the decision was taken by Southern Transitional Council, led by Aidarus al Zubaidi, which controls Aden and other parts of southern Yemen. Saudi Arabia said the move undermined efforts to calm tensions and maintain stability.

The STC rejected the accusation and said Saudi authorities had imposed new restrictions on flights to and from Aden. STC aligned officials said planes were being forced to stop in Saudi Arabia for inspections before being allowed to travel onward, a step they described as an air blockade.

Following the dispute, flights at Aden International Airport were suspended, affecting civilian travel and humanitarian movement. The shutdown added to concerns about worsening conditions for residents in the south.

The incident highlights growing strains between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which back rival factions in Yemen. While Saudi Arabia supports the internationally recognised Yemeni government and a unified state, the UAE has close ties with the STC, which seeks greater autonomy for the south.

Saudi officials warned that continued obstruction could lead to further measures, while calling for dialogue to avoid escalation. Analysts say the dispute reflects a deeper power struggle in southern Yemen at a time when the broader war has entered a fragile and uncertain phase.
