Crans Montana: Pressure is mounting on Swiss authorities to explain how a devastating fire at a mountain resort bar claimed dozens of lives, as all victims have now been formally identified and investigations intensify.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight on January 1 at a crowded bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana, killing about 40 people and injuring more than 110 others. Many of the victims were teenagers and young adults who had gathered to celebrate the New Year.
Swiss police said the identification process was completed after several days of painstaking work, as many victims suffered severe burns. Authorities confirmed that dozens of injured people remain in hospital, with several still in critical condition.
Investigators believe the blaze may have started when sparkler candles used during celebrations ignited material on the ceiling. Fire officials are examining whether flammable soundproofing and possible safety lapses allowed the flames to spread rapidly, leaving little time for escape.
Public anger has grown as questions emerge about fire safety standards, emergency exits and whether the venue was properly inspected. Some families have also asked why very young people were allowed inside the bar late at night.
Prosecutors in the canton of Valais have opened a criminal investigation into those responsible for running the venue. The inquiry is focusing on possible negligence resulting in deaths and serious injuries. No arrests have been made so far, and authorities say the investigation is still at an early stage.
The tragedy has drawn international attention, with victims identified from several European countries. Some governments have begun repatriating the bodies of their citizens, while memorial services and candlelight vigils have been held in Crans Montana and elsewhere in Switzerland.
Swiss leaders have expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and promised a full and transparent investigation. For many residents and grieving relatives, however, the central question remains unanswered how such a deadly fire could happen in a country known for strict safety rules.
As the resort town mourns, calls are growing for accountability and for stronger measures to ensure that such a disaster is never repeated.
