India advises citizens to avoid non essential travel to Iran as protests intensify

New Delhi: India has advised its citizens to avoid non essential travel to Iran following a worsening security situation as protests continue to spread across several parts of the country.

In an advisory issued on Monday the Ministry of External Affairs said Indian nationals should exercise extreme caution due to the ongoing unrest. The government also urged Indians currently in Iran to remain vigilant and stay away from areas witnessing demonstrations or large public gatherings.

The advisory comes amid reports of intensifying protests in Iran driven by economic hardship rising prices and wider political grievances. Demonstrations have been reported in Tehran and several other cities with occasional clashes between protesters and security forces. International media and rights groups have reported casualties though Iranian authorities have not released detailed official figures.

The ministry said Indians already in Iran including students professionals and businesspersons should closely monitor local news updates and follow instructions issued by local authorities. They have also been asked to remain in touch with the Indian Embassy in Tehran and register their details if they have not already done so.

The Indian Embassy has advised citizens to avoid unnecessary movement limit travel within the country and keep emergency contact details accessible at all times. Families in India have also been requested to stay in regular contact with relatives residing in Iran.

India maintains close people to people ties with Iran including a sizable number of students traders and pilgrims. The government said it is closely watching developments and will issue further updates as the situation evolves.

The advisory will remain in force until further notice as authorities assess how the situation on the ground unfolds.
