May the industry of war be replaced by the craft of peace, Pope says at epiphany

Vatican City:Pope Pope Leo XIV on Monday called on the world to move away from violence and division and to become builders of peace and hope as he reflected on the message of the Epiphany during his Angelus prayer at Saint Peter’s Square.

Speaking after celebrating the Solemnity of the Epiphany at Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Pope said the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem shows that faith is not about holding on to what we have but about giving ourselves fully to God and to others. He said the gifts offered to the Christ Child remind believers that everything they are and possess should be shared so that the presence of Jesus can grow in the world.

The Pope explained that kneeling before the Infant of Bethlehem means recognising true humanity revealed in Jesus, a humanity open to others and rooted in communion. He said Christ brings a life that frees people from fear and opens the path to peace, not through force but through trust and shared responsibility.

Reflecting on the gold frankincense and myrrh offered by the Magi, Pope Leo said the gifts may appear useless for a child, yet they carry a deeper meaning. They show that the greatest gift is the willingness to give everything. He recalled the poor widow in the Gospel who offered her last coins at the Temple, saying her example teaches the same lesson of total trust and self giving.

Turning to the conclusion of the Jubilee of Hope marked by the closing of the Holy Door on Monday, the Pope said the Jubilee reminded the Church of justice rooted in generosity and care for one another. He said real hope must be grounded in daily life because Jesus entered human history to change it from within.

Calling on believers to be weavers of hope, Pope Leo urged people to transform inequality into fairness and hostility into fraternity. He said hope becomes real when strangers and enemies are treated as brothers and sisters, and when the logic of war is replaced by patient work for peace.

After the Angelus, the Pope greeted pilgrims gathered in the square and offered his New Year wishes. He also marked Missionary Childhood Day, thanking children and young people around the world for praying for missionaries and helping those in need. He concluded by extending his prayers to Eastern Christian communities preparing to celebrate Christmas according to the Julian calendar, asking that peace and serenity be granted to their families.
