Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV on Saturday thanked civil and Church institutions that worked behind the scenes during the Jubilee Year of Hope, saying their dedication helped Rome welcome millions of pilgrims from around the world.
Speaking in the Paul VI Audience Hall, Pope greeted representatives of the Italian government, security forces, Vatican offices and many other organizations involved in the Jubilee celebrations. He expressed deep gratitude for what he called their multifaceted and often unseen service.
Because of their efforts, the Pope said, more than 30 million pilgrims were able to take part in the Jubilee journey, visiting the Holy Doors and the tombs of the Apostles. These moments, he noted, became real experiences of hope for people coming to Rome as pilgrims.
Reflecting on the meaning of pilgrimage, Pope Leo recalled the words of Saint Augustine, who wrote that hope is essential for those on a journey. He said the work of volunteers and collaborators helped visitors rediscover a hope that does not disappoint.
Pope paid special attention to the large number of young people who travelled to Rome during the Jubilee. He described their presence as a beautiful witness, noting that although they came from different backgrounds, they were united and respectful, thanks in part to the careful service of those who supported them.
He reminded everyone that society has a responsibility toward these young people and their future. He encouraged Jubilee partners and volunteers to reflect on what the younger generation truly needs and where they can find answers to the deep questions in their hearts. He stressed the importance of good role models and pointed to the examples of Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis as guides on the path to holiness.
Looking back to the opening of the Holy Door in 2024, Pope recalled the appeal to hope made by his predecessor, Pope Francis. He said that call remains a mandate for today, encouraging everyone to let the seeds of hope planted during the Jubilee continue to grow.
At the end of the meeting, Pope Leo presented the volunteers with a small Jubilee Crucifix as a sign of gratitude. He said it should serve as a reminder of the shared journey and the unique experience they had just completed.
He concluded by blessing all those present and wishing them well for the new year, thanking them once again for their service.
