Denmark and Greenland reject US push for control after high level talks

Washington:Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any suggestion that Greenland could come under United States control following high level talks in Washington, calling the idea unacceptable and a violation of sovereignty.

The issue was discussed during a tense meeting between Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt and senior US officials including Vice President J D Vance. The talks were described by Danish officials as frank and serious, but they ended without agreement on the central issue.

President Donald Trump has once again stressed that Greenland is vital to US national security, citing growing Russian and Chinese interest in the Arctic region. He has argued that the United States needs a stronger role on the island due to its strategic location and military importance.

Denmark and Greenland made it clear that Greenland is not for sale and that its future can only be decided by its people. Greenlandic leaders underlined their commitment to self determination and said any attempt to change the island’s status through pressure would be rejected.

While no breakthrough was achieved, all sides agreed to set up a working group to continue discussions on Arctic security and cooperation. Officials said this would focus on defence, climate challenges and regional stability rather than questions of ownership.

In response to rising tensions, Denmark has increased its military presence in and around Greenland, working closely with NATO allies. Several European countries have also voiced support for Denmark, stressing the importance of respecting borders and international law.

Despite diplomatic efforts, a fundamental disagreement remains between Washington and Copenhagen. For now, Denmark and Greenland insist that cooperation can continue, but only on the basis of mutual respect and recognition of sovereignty.
