We are precious in God’s eyes Pope says at Angelus

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV on Sunday reminded Christians that every person is precious in God’s eyes and called on the faithful to stay focused on what truly matters in life.

Speaking during the Angelus prayer in St Peter’s Square,  Pope reflected on the day’s Gospel from Saint John, which speaks about John the Baptist recognising Jesus as the Lamb of God and the promised Messiah. John openly pointed to Jesus as the Saviour and then stepped aside, saying that Jesus existed before him and was greater than him.

Pope said John the Baptist was deeply loved by the people and even feared by the authorities of Jerusalem. Despite this popularity, John did not use his influence for himself. Instead, he humbly accepted his role of preparing the way for the Lord and then gave space to Jesus.

Pope Leo said this witness is very important for people today. He noted that many seek happiness through approval, popularity and public recognition, but these often lead to disappointment, fragile relationships and inner emptiness.

True joy, Pope explained, does not come from success or fame. It comes from knowing that we are loved and wanted by our heavenly Father. He said Jesus shows us a God who comes close to us, shares our struggles and carries our burdens, rather than impressing us with outward displays.

Through this closeness, the Pope said, Jesus reveals the truth about who we are and how valuable we are in God’s sight.

Before concluding, Pope Leo urged the faithful not to be distracted by appearances or waste energy chasing what does not last. He encouraged everyone to learn from John the Baptist by living simply, speaking honestly, remaining vigilant and growing in depth of heart and mind.

Pope also invited people to set aside time each day for silence, prayer and reflection, describing it as withdrawing into the desert to meet the Lord and remain with Him.

He ended by entrusting this commitment to the Virgin Mary, whom he described as a model of simplicity, wisdom and humility, asking her to help the faithful live these values in daily life.
