Catholic bishops warn leaders as fighting spreads in South Sudan

Juba: Catholic bishops in South Sudan have strongly condemned the renewed fighting in parts of the country, saying citizens must never be treated as property or tools of war.

In a public statement, the bishops expressed deep concern over fresh violence reported mainly in Jonglei and Eastern Equatoria states. They said the clashes are causing fear, displacement, and suffering among ordinary people who already face hunger and insecurity.

The Church leaders reminded political and military authorities that every human life has dignity. They said communities should not be targeted or forced to flee because of power struggles. According to the bishops, war only increases poverty and hatred while destroying trust between ethnic groups.

They also warned against the use of hate speech and tribal messages, especially on social media. Such language, they said, fuels anger and can easily lead to more violence.

The bishops urged all parties to return to dialogue and fully respect the 2018 peace agreement, which was meant to end years of conflict. They said military solutions will not bring lasting peace and called on leaders to put the needs of the people before political interests.

Recent humanitarian reports show that fighting has displaced many families and forced some to seek shelter in churches and temporary camps. Aid agencies say food shortages and lack of medical care are growing problems in affected areas.

Church leaders appealed to the international community and regional partners not to abandon South Sudan’s peace process. They also asked priests, religious groups, and believers to continue praying for peace and to support victims of violence.

The bishops said the country still has a chance for peace if leaders choose dialogue instead of guns and if citizens are treated with respect and compassion.
