Como: As the world prepares for the 25th Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina, Pope Leo XIV has extended a message of encouragement to all athletes, volunteers, and sporting associations participating in the international event, emphasizing the enduring values of sport.
On Friday, a special Mass was held in the northern Italian city of Como, attended by Olympic athletes and representatives of sporting organizations. The XXV Winter Olympics, scheduled from February 6 to 22, 2026, will take place across multiple venues in Lombardy and Northeast Italy, drawing participants from around the globe.
During the Mass, a telegram from Pope Leo XIV, signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, was read by Cardinal Oscar Cantoni, Bishop of Como. In his message, the Pope conveyed his cordial and best-wishing greetings to the people of the Vicariate of Bormio and all those involved in organizing the Milano Cortina Games.
Pope Leo acknowledged the historical significance of the Olympic Games, noting that the event brings together both professional and amateur athletes every four years, fostering competition, camaraderie, and international friendship. He expressed his hope that the Games would serve as an opportunity to cultivate the true spirit of sport promoting fair play, mutual respect, teamwork, personal sacrifice, social inclusion, and the joy of encounter.
Highlighting the role of local communities, the Pope invited parishioners in northern Italy to offer “generous Christian witness,” demonstrating through their actions the presence of Christ and fostering a spirit of fraternity among all participants.
Concluding his message, Pope Leo assured athletes, volunteers, and organizers of his prayers, imparting his Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of spiritual support and heavenly favors for the success of the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games.
The Pope’s message underscores the universal values that transcend medals and competition, reminding the global sporting community that the Olympics are not only a test of physical excellence but also a celebration of human dignity, solidarity, and ethical sportsmanship.
