Washington: A warm and fraternal celebration was held at the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington on Friday to mark the 80th birthday of Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. The gathering brought together Church officials, colleagues, and friends to honor the Cardinal’s decades of service to the Holy See and the global Church.
During the event, Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, Substitute of the Secretariat of State, read a telegram from Pope Leo XIV, conveying his cordial birthday wishes. In the message, the Pope expressed his deep appreciation for Cardinal Pierre’s steadfast commitment throughout his long ministry, highlighting his tireless work “in service to the Gospel and the Holy See.” Archbishop Peña Parra also relayed greetings from Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and other officials of the Secretariat of State, emphasizing the Vatican’s esteem for the Nuncio.
Cardinal Pierre, in a brief and unscripted address, thanked those present and reflected on his years of diplomatic and ecclesial service, recalling meaningful moments from his mission in the United States and his broader work representing the Holy See internationally.
Adding to the tributes, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Archbishop of Oklahoma City, praised Cardinal Pierre for his dedication and guidance as the Pope’s representative, acknowledging his role in strengthening the Church’s mission and fostering dialogue in the country.
The celebration concluded with honors presented to the Nunciature staff, recognizing their contributions to supporting the Cardinal in his ministry. The event underscored both the personal warmth and professional respect Cardinal Pierre commands among the Church’s hierarchy and the faithful alike.
