Pope Leo XIV Joins Cuban Bishops in Urging Dialogue Amid Rising US-Cuba Tensions

Vatican City: Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Cuba, Pope Leo XIV has joined the Cuban Bishops in appealing for dialogue, reform, and respect for human dignity. Speaking at his Sunday Angelus address, the Pope voiced deep concern for the Cuban people and called on all parties to pursue “sincere and effective dialogue” to prevent further suffering.

“I join the message of the Cuban Bishops, inviting those in positions of responsibility to promote genuine and constructive dialogue, avoiding any form of violence or actions that could increase the hardships faced by the beloved Cuban people,” Pope Leo said. He concluded his prayer with a plea to the Blessed Virgin Mary, invoking Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre to watch over all Cubans: “May she assist and protect all the children of that cherished land!”

The appeal follows a statement issued by the Catholic Bishops of Cuba on Saturday, addressed “to all Cubans of good will.” In their message, the Bishops highlighted the urgent need for economic, social, and humanitarian reforms in the country, while warning against actions that could exacerbate pain or unrest. “Cuba needs change, and the need is growing urgent, but it does not need more anguish or suffering,” the Bishops wrote. “No more bloodshed. No more mourning in Cuban families. Our recent history has already witnessed far too much of that.”

The Bishops stressed their vision for a “renewed, prosperous, and joyful Cuba” but underscored that progress should never come at the cost of human suffering. They expressed concern over the impact of US-imposed tariffs on oil-exporting nations, warning that “the risk of social unrest is real.” Citing the consistent stance of Pope Leo and the Holy See, they emphasized that international disputes should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue, not coercion or conflict.

Highlighting the primacy of human dignity and freedom, the Bishops called for “an environment of healthy plurality and mutual respect” within Cuba, noting that such conditions are essential for productive engagement on the international stage. They reaffirmed the local Church’s commitment to accompany the Cuban people by promoting conversion, proclaiming the Gospel, and serving those in need.

Through his Angelus appeal, Pope Leo XIV reinforced the Vatican’s message that dialogue, compassion, and respect for human rights must guide efforts to address both domestic and international tensions affecting Cuba.
