New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday thanked US President Donald Trump for reducing tariffs on Indian goods and said Trump’s leadership would be crucial for global peace and stability.
Modi shared his message after the United States and India announced a new trade agreement that eases duties on several Indian exports. The deal is expected to help Indian industries such as textiles, leather, seafood and engineering products by making them more competitive in the American market.
In his statement, Modi referred to Trump as a “dear friend” and said closer cooperation between the two countries would benefit not only India and the US but also the wider world. He added that strong leadership and partnership were needed at a time of global tensions and economic uncertainty.
According to officials, the agreement brings down US tariffs on many Indian products to about 18 percent. The move follows months of negotiations after trade disputes between the two countries led to higher duties last year.
Trump said the deal showed the strength of India US relations and praised Modi for his role in reaching the agreement. He also said economic cooperation would support peace and stability.
The trade deal has been welcomed by business groups in India, who say lower tariffs will improve exports and create more jobs. Analysts believe the agreement could also open the door for further cooperation in areas such as energy, technology and defence.
The announcement comes at a time when both leaders are trying to strengthen ties and present their partnership as a force for economic growth and international peace.
