Chios: At least 15 migrants have died after their speedboat collided with a patrol vessel of the Greek coast guard in the eastern Aegean Sea near Chios.
Greek authorities said the crash happened late at night while the migrants were trying to reach the island from the Turkish coast. The speedboat was moving fast and is believed to have been attempting to avoid the patrol when the collision occurred.
Rescue teams pulled 14 bodies from the sea. One woman who was rescued alive later died in hospital, taking the death toll to 15. Around 25 people survived the incident, including about 11 children. They were taken to hospital for treatment. Two coast guard officers were also injured in the crash.
Search and rescue operations continued through the day with the help of patrol boats, divers and a helicopter. Officials said the total number of people who were on the migrant boat is still not known, raising fears that more victims could be missing.
The Greek coast guard has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Early reports suggest poor visibility and high speed may have played a role.
The tragedy highlights the dangers faced by migrants who attempt the sea crossing to Greece in small and overcrowded boats. The Aegean route remains one of the main paths into Europe, especially for people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East and Asia.
Local authorities on Chios said they are providing medical and psychological support to survivors while the search continues in nearby waters.
