Pope urges prayers for Ukraine and warns against new nuclear arms race

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called on the world to pray for the people of Ukraine and to renew global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

Speaking during his weekly General Audience on Wednesday, the Pope said the Ukrainian people continue to suffer greatly because of the war, especially as renewed attacks have damaged energy infrastructure during freezing winter conditions. He urged believers to show solidarity through prayer and support.

Pope thanked Catholic dioceses in Poland and other countries for their practical help to Ukrainians facing the harsh cold. He said their efforts were a sign of real compassion for those enduring difficult living conditions.

Turning to global security, the Pope spoke about the New START treaty between the United States and Russia, which is due to expire soon. He described the agreement as an important step in limiting nuclear weapons and promoting trust between nations.

He appealed to world leaders not to let the treaty end without finding a meaningful and effective follow up. He warned that allowing it to lapse could lead to a new arms race and make the world less safe.

Pope said the current situation requires strong action to prevent fear and mistrust from guiding international decisions. Instead, he called for a shared sense of responsibility for peace and for choices that serve the common good.

New START was first signed in 2010 and later extended in 2021. It set limits on long range nuclear weapons held by the United States and Russia. It also allowed inspections and regular sharing of data between the two countries.

Experts fear that if the treaty ends without replacement, it could open the door to a dangerous and costly race to build more nuclear weapons. Pope said this risk must be avoided and urged the international community to work together to protect peace for future generations.
