Warsaw: The United States has suspended official contact with the speaker of Poland’s parliament after remarks critical of US President Donald Trump, in a move that has caused fresh diplomatic tension between two close allies.
According to diplomatic sources, the US ambassador to Poland has stopped all formal communication with the parliamentary speaker following comments that were described by Washington as insulting and disrespectful to the US president. The remarks were linked to criticism of Trump’s foreign policy and opposition to a proposal to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The US embassy said the decision was taken to signal that personal attacks on the American president were unacceptable and could harm bilateral relations. Officials stressed that the move was directed at the individual comments and did not represent a broader shift in US policy towards Poland.
The Polish parliament speaker defended his statements, saying he had expressed a political opinion and did not intend to damage relations with the United States. He added that dialogue between allies should allow room for disagreement, even on sensitive issues.
The Polish government has sought to play down the incident, underlining that ties with Washington remain strong, especially in the areas of defence and security. Poland is one of the United States’ closest partners in Europe and hosts US troops as part of NATO’s eastern flank.
Analysts say the episode reflects wider strains between the Trump administration and some European political figures, particularly over NATO, defence spending and global security issues. While the diplomatic freeze is largely symbolic, it highlights how sharp political language can quickly spill over into official relations.
For now, both sides say cooperation at government and military levels continues, but the situation has added an unexpected note of tension to the US Poland partnership.
