New Delhi: India is preparing to significantly enhance its long-range air strike capabilities with a planned procurement of advanced SCALP cruise missiles from France, further deepening strategic defense cooperation between the two nations. According to defense sources, discussions between New Delhi and Paris are at an advanced stage, and the deal is expected to be finalized in the coming months.
The SCALP missile, developed by European defense major MBDA, is a long-range, air-launched cruise missile designed for deep-strike missions. It is capable of hitting high-value targets such as fortified bunkers, command centres, and critical infrastructure with exceptional accuracy while remaining outside enemy air defense zones. The missile is known for its low-altitude flight profile, stealth characteristics, and advanced guidance systems that allow it to evade radar detection.
Indian Air Force officials indicate that the new acquisition will primarily strengthen the combat potential of the Rafale fighter jet fleet, which is already configured to carry the SCALP system.
