New York: Amazon is in discussions with publishers about creating a new marketplace where media content could be licensed for use in artificial intelligence systems, according to industry reports.
The proposed platform would allow publishers to offer their articles, books and other content to companies developing AI tools. In return, publishers would receive payment when their material is used to train AI models or generate responses.
The idea surfaced in internal presentation materials linked to Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing arm, ahead of an upcoming industry event. The documents suggest the marketplace could become part of Amazon’s wider set of AI products and services.
Publishers have long raised concerns about their content being used by AI systems without permission or fair compensation. Many media groups are now pushing for payment models that are based on how often and how extensively their work is used by AI tools.
Amazon said it has maintained relationships with publishers for many years but did not confirm specific plans for launching such a marketplace. The company added that it had nothing concrete to announce at this stage.
If developed, the marketplace could offer AI developers a clearer and more transparent way to access licensed content, while giving publishers more control over how their work is used in the fast growing AI industry.
The discussions come as technology companies face increasing pressure worldwide to address copyright issues linked to generative AI and to find new ways to balance innovation with creators’ rights.
