Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has expressed his closeness to the people of Madagascar following the destruction caused by two powerful cyclones that struck the island nation within a short period of time.
Speaking after the Angelus prayer, Pope said he was praying for the victims and their families and for all those who have suffered serious damage. His message came as the country struggles to recover from the impact of cyclones Gezani and Fytia during an intense cyclone season in the southwest Indian Ocean.
Madagascar has declared a national emergency and appealed for international assistance after the storms displaced about 16,000 people. Cyclone Gezani made landfall on February 10, affecting around 270,000 people and forcing thousands from their homes. Authorities have reported at least 40 deaths.
Rescue teams, supported by the United Nations and humanitarian partners, are working to conduct search and rescue operations, evacuations, and provide shelter and food to those affected.
Turning to another global moment, Pope Leo also spoke about the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations. With millions of families in East Asia and across the world preparing to welcome the new year on February 17, he expressed hope that the joyful feast will strengthen family ties and friendships.
He prayed that the celebration may bring serenity to homes and society and serve as an opportunity to build peace and prosperity for all peoples.
Pope concluded by extending his good wishes and invoking God’s blessing on everyone celebrating the new year.
