Macron praises India’s digital identity system as a model for the world

New Delhi:  French President Emmanuel Macron has praised India’s digital transformation, calling it remarkable that about 1.4 billion people have been provided with a digital identity. He said India has built a digital system at a scale no other country has achieved.

Speaking during his visit to India for technology and innovation meetings, Macron highlighted how India’s digital infrastructure allows citizens to access services, make payments and prove identity securely. He noted that the system demonstrates how technology can be used to serve people on a massive scale.

India’s digital public infrastructure includes Aadhaar, the biometric identity system that covers nearly the entire population, the Unified Payments Interface that enables instant money transfers, and DigiLocker, which allows people to store and access official documents online. Together, these systems support welfare delivery, banking access and government services.

Macron also praised India’s wider technology ecosystem, saying the country is not only participating in global innovation but helping lead it. He pointed to India’s strong talent base and the growing influence of Indian technology leaders around the world.

His remarks came as India and France deepen cooperation in technology, artificial intelligence and digital governance. Discussions during the visit focused on building safe and inclusive digital systems and expanding innovation partnerships.

Experts say India’s digital identity and payments infrastructure is increasingly being studied by other countries because it improves financial inclusion, reduces fraud and enables efficient delivery of public services.

Macron’s comments underscore India’s growing role as a global example of how digital systems can support inclusive development and strengthen governance in the digital age.
