Amazon cloud faces scrutiny after AI linked outages

San Francisco:  Amazon’s cloud computing division faced fresh questions this week after reports said two service outages were linked to the company’s internal artificial intelligence tools.

According to a report by the Financial Times, problems occurred within Amazon’s cloud arm, Amazon Web Services, including one disruption in mid December 2025 that lasted about 13 hours. The issue reportedly involved an AI coding tool used by engineers to automatically create and manage software systems.

The report said the AI tool deleted and rebuilt part of a system environment, which led to service disruption in one mainland China region. The incident raised concerns about how automated AI systems are supervised inside large technology companies.

Amazon responded by disputing claims that an AI malfunction directly caused the outage. The company said the disruption was due to misconfigured user access controls and described the impact as limited. It added that core computing and storage services were not affected.

The company has recently been encouraging wider use of AI tools among its engineers as part of a broader push into artificial intelligence. AWS is investing heavily in AI services as competition increases from other major cloud providers.

Following the outages, AWS reportedly strengthened its internal safeguards. These measures include tighter approval systems, stronger peer review processes, and additional oversight when using AI driven coding assistants.

The incident highlights the growing dependence on cloud infrastructure around the world. Even short disruptions can affect businesses, online platforms, and digital services that rely on large cloud providers.

Industry analysts say that as companies adopt more autonomous AI tools, strong monitoring systems and human oversight will be essential to avoid similar incidents in the future.

The Financial Times report has intensified discussion about the balance between innovation and reliability as technology firms expand their use of artificial intelligence.
