Kathmandu mayor and former rapper emerges as frontrunner in Nepal’s political race

Kathmandu: Balendra Shah, a former rapper who rose to national prominence as the mayor of Kathmandu, has emerged as a leading contender to become Nepal’s next prime minister ahead of the country’s upcoming general election.

The 35 year old engineer turned politician gained widespread attention after resigning as mayor earlier this year to enter national politics. He is now the prime ministerial candidate of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, a relatively new political force that has attracted strong support from young voters.

Shah first became a household name in 2022 when he won the Kathmandu mayoral election as an independent candidate. Known widely by his stage name Balen, he built his reputation through hip hop music that criticized corruption, inequality and political mismanagement. His anti establishment message and active use of social media helped him connect with Nepal’s youth.

His rise comes after a period of political unrest and youth led protests in 2025 that forced a change in national leadership and exposed deep frustration with traditional political elites. Many young voters see Shah as a symbol of generational change and political accountability.

During his time as mayor, he gained recognition for efforts to improve urban management and enforce regulations in the capital. While some of his actions were praised for restoring order and efficiency, others drew criticism from vendors and small business owners affected by enforcement drives.

Shah’s party has promised sweeping reforms, including job creation, expanded healthcare access, economic growth and stronger anti corruption measures. The party also aims to reform bureaucracy and create opportunities to reduce the number of young Nepalis seeking employment abroad.

Political analysts say his popularity reflects growing public demand for clean governance and fresh leadership. However, they caution that if he comes to power, he will face entrenched bureaucracy, economic challenges and the need to build an experienced governing team.

The upcoming election is expected to be a decisive moment for Nepal as voters weigh the promise of new leadership against the experience of established parties.
