Prime minister calls for unity among Christian churches

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that unity among Christian churches is essential for the progress of believers and the wider society.

He made the remarks while meeting Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II, head of the Syriac Orthodox Church, and leaders of the Jacobite Syrian Christian community. The meeting focused on church unity, minority welfare and long standing disputes affecting Christian communities.

The Prime Minister noted that divisions within churches weaken both faith communities and social harmony. He encouraged reconciliation and urged that disputes be resolved through dialogue and peaceful solutions whenever possible.

Church leaders shared concerns about internal conflicts and challenges faced by vulnerable members of minority communities. They also sought government support to ensure justice, protection and welfare for disadvantaged groups.

After the meeting, Modi expressed happiness at meeting the Patriarch and said discussions covered issues affecting the Christian community and ways to strengthen harmony.

Observers say the call for unity reflects wider efforts to promote cooperation among Christian denominations so they can work together in social service, peacebuilding and community development.
