Explosion hits oil tanker off Kuwait coast causing spill in Gulf

Kuwait City: A large explosion struck a British oil tanker anchored off the coast of Kuwait, causing damage to the vessel and triggering an oil spill into the sea. Authorities said the crew members on board were safe, but the incident has raised fresh concerns about security in one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes.

The explosion was reported about 30 nautical miles southeast of Kuwait’s Mubarak Al Kabeer port in the Persian Gulf. According to maritime monitoring authorities, the captain of the tanker reported hearing and seeing a powerful blast near the port side of the vessel. Soon after the explosion, oil began leaking from one of the cargo tanks into the water.

Officials said the tanker suffered structural damage and started taking in some water after the blast. However, there were no immediate reports of fire on board, and the crew managed to remain safe while emergency procedures were carried out.

Maritime security agencies said a small craft was seen moving away from the area shortly after the explosion, raising suspicions that the incident may have been caused by an external attack. Investigations are now under way to determine the exact cause of the blast.

Environmental authorities have also expressed concern about the oil leaking into the Gulf waters. The full extent of the spill is still being assessed, and officials are monitoring the situation to prevent further damage to marine life and coastal ecosystems.

The incident comes at a time of rising tension in the Middle East, where conflicts and military activity have increased risks for commercial shipping in the region. The Persian Gulf is a critical route for global energy supplies, and any disruption to tanker traffic could have wider effects on international oil markets.

Maritime agencies have advised ships operating in nearby waters to remain alert while authorities continue their investigation and response efforts.
