Pope Leo Appeals for Silence of Weapons in Iran, Urges Global Prayer for Peace

Vatican City: During the Sunday Angelus address, Pope Leo XIV made a heartfelt appeal for peace in the Middle East, urging that the sounds of warfare cease and that nations return to dialogue. Speaking to nearly 15,000 pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Pontiff called on the faithful around the world to pray that violence in Iran and across the region may come to an end.

After leading the Angelus prayer, the Pope reflected on the troubling developments unfolding in the Middle East, noting that recent reports from the region continue to cause “deep sorrow and alarm.” He pointed particularly to the widespread destruction, rising violence, and the growing atmosphere of hostility and fear affecting people in Iran and neighboring areas.

The Holy Father expressed concern that the ongoing tensions could destabilize nearby countries, especially Lebanon, which he described affectionately as a nation that has already endured repeated periods of instability. According to the Pope, further escalation of conflict could plunge the region into an even deeper humanitarian and political crisis.

Addressing the gathered pilgrims, the Pope urged them to pray that the “roar of bombs may cease” and that weapons may fall silent. He emphasized the urgent need for space where meaningful dialogue can begin, allowing the voices and concerns of ordinary people to be heard. True peace, he said, can only emerge when nations choose conversation and mutual understanding instead of violence.

Entrusting his appeal to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom the Church honors as Queen of Peace, the Pope asked her to pray especially for those suffering because of war. He also prayed that hearts hardened by conflict may be guided toward reconciliation, compassion, and renewed hope.

The Pope had already voiced similar concerns the previous Sunday during the Angelus, when he spoke about the worsening situation in the Middle East and Iran. On that occasion, he warned that lasting peace cannot be achieved through threats or the use of weapons that only bring destruction, pain, and death. Instead, he stressed that stability is built through sincere, responsible, and rational dialogue among nations.

Highlighting the danger of uncontrolled escalation, the Pontiff cautioned that the world could face a tragedy of enormous proportions if the cycle of violence continues unchecked. He therefore issued a strong moral appeal to all parties involved in the conflict to halt the spiral of aggression before it leads to irreversible consequences.

Pope Leo concluded by urging governments and international actors to restore diplomacy to its rightful place. He prayed that world leaders would prioritize the welfare of their people people who desire peaceful coexistence grounded in justice and mutual respect. The Pope once again encouraged the faithful everywhere to continue praying fervently for peace in the troubled region.
