Vatican academy calls scientists worldwide to work for peace

Vatican City: The Pontifical Academy for Life has launched a global appeal inviting scientists, researchers and academics to take concrete steps to promote peace at a time when conflicts and violence are affecting many parts of the world.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the academy said the growing use of the language of weapons and war has created a troubling situation that also affects scientific research. Because of this, the academy urged members of the scientific community to take a clear stand for peace and to help find paths toward reconciliation and conflict resolution.

The appeal encourages scientists and academics to begin this effort through their daily research work, using knowledge and collaboration to help build a more peaceful world.

The initiative is promoted by the Pontifical Academy for Life and is supported by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. It is open to scientists, researchers and scholars from every field of study, regardless of nationality, cultural background, political views or religious belief.

The academy also proposed several areas of focus for those who support the appeal. These include encouraging research projects that bring together people from different cultures, being attentive to the risk that scientific discoveries could be misused for harmful purposes such as military activities, and recognizing research as an important tool in building peace.

According to the academy, the appeal reflects its mission to promote interdisciplinary studies related to the protection and dignity of human life.

The statement also emphasized that scientific research should be guided by the search for truth and carried out through rigorous methods. It said that knowledge grows through cooperation, open sharing of ideas and a willingness to question and improve existing understanding.

The academy further encouraged the scientific community to ensure that competition and debate are based on transparent communication and aimed at serving the common good rather than personal interests.

Scientists and academics who wish to support the initiative can sign the appeal through the website of the Pontifical Academy for Life.
