FBI warns of possible Iranian drone threat in California as security tightened for Oscars

Washington: US federal authorities have issued a warning to law enforcement agencies in California about a possible drone attack linked to Iran, prompting increased security measures in the state, especially ahead of the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation circulated an alert earlier this week after receiving information suggesting that Iran could attempt a surprise drone attack on the US West Coast. According to officials, the warning was based on an unverified tip that indicated drones might be launched from a vessel positioned in the Pacific Ocean.

Authorities said the alert did not include specific details about targets, timing, or individuals involved. The information reportedly came through a single email tip, and investigators are still working to determine its credibility.

The warning came at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following recent military confrontations in the Middle East. Security analysts say the possibility of long range drone attacks cannot be completely ruled out, although such an operation would be technically difficult and risky for any country attempting it.

The White House sought to calm public concerns, saying there is currently no credible threat to the United States homeland. President Donald J Trump also said he is not worried about an Iranian attack inside the country but confirmed that security agencies remain alert.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said authorities have found no sign of an immediate danger to the state. However, state and federal agencies are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

Meanwhile, security has been significantly increased in Los Angeles ahead of the 98th Academy Awards ceremony. Officials said hundreds of police officers, security personnel, and specialized units will be deployed around the venue. A large security perimeter is also expected around the Dolby Theatre where the Oscars will take place.

Local police and federal agencies said the measures are precautionary and part of standard security planning for major international events. Investigations into the warning are ongoing as authorities assess whether the information represents a real threat or a false alarm.
