Pope Leo urges moral responsibility in technology on international day of mathematics

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called on scientists and researchers to pay close attention to the moral dimension of emerging technologies, saying that knowledge alone is not enough if people fail to understand the deeper meaning of life.

The message was sent for the International Day of Mathematics and was addressed to Professor BetĂĽl Tanbay, chair of the International Day of Mathematics. It was delivered during a webinar held under the theme Mathematics and Hope. The message was signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

Reflecting on the challenges facing the modern world, Pope said the human family is living in a time of rapid technological development. While these advancements have great potential to benefit society, they can also cause harm if they are not guided by strong moral values.

Pope Leo encouraged mathematicians and researchers to become signs of hope for the world, especially at a time when technology is developing at an unprecedented pace.

He pointed in particular to the growing use of algorithms in artificial intelligence and suggested that this field offers important opportunities for research. However, he stressed that such work requires more than intellectual ability and innovation. According to Pope, scientists must also develop morally and spiritually so they can understand the wider impact of their work.

Recalling his own experience as a teacher of mathematics and physics, Pope Leo said that having vast knowledge does not automatically give meaning to human life. He said people must also ask deeper questions about who they are and what their purpose is.

Pope also urged those involved in the field of mathematics and technology to remain attentive to the spiritual needs of the human heart. He said the digital world should be shaped in a way that promotes fraternity, creativity and respect for human dignity.

He encouraged participants in the International Day of Mathematics event to become voices of hope, truth and goodness in society.

Pope Leo concluded his message by praying that all those taking part in the event would receive divine blessings of wisdom, joy and peace.
